My nonno Loves & A Little Messy Productions
This September school holidays, I had the absolute pleasure of joining A Little Messy Productions for a very special creative day for kids in Shepparton.
I love combining my two worlds of children’s books and art, so it was wonderful to spend the morning sharing My Nonno Loves and My Nonna Loves with a group of enthusiastic young artists and readers!
We talked about the little things that make our relationships with family so specia, the people we love, the memories we share and the everyday moments that stay with us.
I then encouraged the children to think about how colour, images and symbols can express feelings, memories and connection. We explored how an artwork doesn’t always need to show something literally. Sometimes a colour, shape or small object can tell an entire story.
The main activity was a personal mixed-media collage, where each child created an artwork inspired by something meaningful to them. There were lots of different materials to experiment with, and it was wonderful to see how differently each young creator approached the activity.
And, of course, the best part was that everyone got to take their finished artwork home!
The day wasn’t just about art, either. Creative writing, drama and movement were woven throughout the program, giving the children lots of different ways to express themselves, use their imaginations and connect with each other. And there was even a delicious Italian-inspired treat making activity! Cannoli!!!
It was such a lovely morning, and I was so impressed by the enthusiasm, creativity and thoughtfulness of the young people involved.
A huge thank you to A Little Messy Productions for inviting me to be part of this wonderful day, and especially to Danae and the team for all the care, planning and organisation that went into making it happen.
I feel very lucky to be able to combine my love of art, children’s books and working with young people and to share those things with children in communities beyond Melbourne.
What a special day in Shepparton! 💛
